About Vitrai
The oldest natural glass in Iran belongs to second millennium BC. In Chaghazenbil excavations from prehistoric time, the glass bottles were found showing the existence of glass in Old Ilam.
In a distant time, the architects have used the reticulated door and windows with the colourful (coloured) glasses in their buildings as this was also considered as the appropriate protection from hot and bright sun in Iran. This also could reflect the light in a variety of colours and this variety gave special manifestation to architectural embellishments (decorations) such as to the paintings on glasses. Worthwhile to mention that desert dwellers, in addition to considering the beauty of glasses, believe that the coloured glasses can scare away the reptiles and insects.
The Iranian-coloured glass is totally different from the gothic glassware making in Europe. The coloured glass was used for the first time in Safaviyeh Era and, in a limited way, in one or two mosques that due to vulnerability, they were not lasted. The application of coloured glass in gothic era in Europe is religious and was only used in churches and later in palaces and some of the wealthy people’s houses. After the industrial revolution and the reduction in glass price, other applications of glass in various industries were appeared.
The vitrail painting techniques on glass and mirror, beside inducing the nostalgic sense of Iranian architecture and the painting on glass works from gothics era, enliven the innovative creativity of contemporary art in everyday life of present human. The vitrail colours has a unique characteristic of being transparent leading to reflecting and spreading the colours in varied spectrum. The vitrail colours, in addition to their stunning beaty, have considerable psychological effects on peace of mind and heart. One of the positive effects of this method is to create the sese of calmness in the audience and to relieve (?) the surrounding environment tension. The vitrail painting on glass and mirror can be considered a new way of continuing the route that the artist has considered on painting on the glass in buildings of gothic era and in coloured glass of Iranian architectural buildings. The vitrail brilliance transparency of colours on the surface of the glass and mirror give the surfaces the imaginary and ethereal manifestation and this is the reason that makes the vitrail techniques different from other painting techniques.Silmilar to the ancient artists who had used coloured glasses in architecture atmosphere to induce the ethereal and spiritual sense, in this method, I have also used the vitrail transparent colours and the effects of glow and reflection of light on them and used the inspired designs (patterns) by prominent works of prior artists, and I invite your eyes to have a new understanding (interpretation) of painting art on the glass.
